The Radical Importance Of Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’

, , , ,

We watched her, in other words,be a regular, flawed, human being In a perfect world, none of this would be cause for so much celebration, or provide so much fodder for think pieces. But the fact that Insecure is the first time that a character like Issa has stood at the center of a narrative on primetime TV makes her rarity and her brilliance worth pointing out. As much as a catalyst in the ever continuing Hollywood diversity conversation as Olivia Pope was, her emergence at just …

Janeane Garofalo is a tiny thing, but the air around her crackles

, , , ,

I think about all Garofalos combined experience on screen and stage, and smile at how lucky I am to have seen her in the flesh One of my favourite romantic comedies was released all the way back in 1996, and while it rarely makes it on to the best-of lists, trust me, Janeane Garofalo. As ateen and even now Iconnected instinctively and intensely with hercharacter: acharming, funny, insecure feministradio host. Ihave followed Garofalos career ever since, but herlower profile in recent years means …

9 nicknames I gave Donald Trump that did nothing to stop his authoritarianism

Image: andrew harrer/Getty Images Since Donald Trump’s election, it has felt hopeless staring down the barrel of the rise of fascism, feeling as if nothing we do or say is being heard by our government. But I, however, will not stand down. So I came up with these rude and crude nicknames for our president that, sadly, did not have the affect on the Trump administration I imagined they would. 1. The Cheeto I referred to Donald Trump as this in an elevator with coworkers and everyone loved …

‘SNL’ gets Trump and O’Reilly just right

(CNN)“Saturday Night Live” returned after a three-week hiatus and delivered a stinging and bold comedic takedown of both Bill O’Reilly and President Donald Trump’s alleged history of sexual misconduct with women. Although “SNL” was unfair in one way — it lumped Trump and O’Reilly’s history of sexism together — when in reality Trump’s is far worse. The show opened the show with Alec Baldwin as Trump at a town hall meeting in …

Penn Jillette: Don Rickles was the kindest man on earth

, , , ,

(CNN)I first saw Don Rickles live in 1975 at the Latin Casino outside of Philadelphia. I was a punk. I cared about The Ramones and Iggy Pop, but I worked in comedy, so I was going to see a Vegas comic: Rickles. I expected to see a kind of cynical, laid back, phone-it-in, old pro performance. What I saw was more energy and power than I would see a few years later from the Sex Pistols. I was sitting way off to one side of the audience so I could see Don go into the wings. And he was …
